In 2018 Nadia was paid in pounds, rented in euros and sent money home to Accra every month. Her bank charged her three times for the privilege, and hid most of it in the exchange rate. Theo, an engineer who had built payment systems for a decade, thought the fix was mostly software.
They started Pocket in Amsterdam in 2019 with one promise: the real exchange rate, and every fee shown upfront. The first card shipped a year later. Business accounts followed in 2023, and Pocket AI in 2025.
The job hasn’t changed. Everything we build has to make money cheaper to move, easier to understand, or safer to hold.
Seven years, in brief.

The real rate
We use the mid-market rate and charge a fee you can see, not a mark-up you can’t.
Your data is yours
We never sell it, and Pocket AI never trains shared models on it.
A human when it matters
Real people in the app, 24/7, for anything that touches your money.
